Court and Law Day – Tuesday 24th November 2026

Dating back over 1,200 years, Ashburton’s Court and Law Day is one of the town’s most important and historic ceremonies. Held annually on the fourth Tuesday in November, the event sees the appointment and swearing-in of the new Portreeve and Master Bailiff. Ashburton is the only town in England to retain the office of Portreeve through an Act of Parliament, making this a truly unique tradition.

Held in the historic Guild of St Lawrence and Town Hall chambers, the Court brings together the Leet and Baron Juries to receive “Presentments” from local residents  e.g. concerns, suggestions and ideas for improving the town. In keeping with centuries-old custom, the Court is duty-bound to pass these matters to the appropriate statutory authorities for consideration.

The day also celebrates Ashburton’s younger generation, with local schoolchildren taking part in the historical procession and receiving the traditional cup and pence awards.
